I hope Justin never grows up!

Ownby spent months tending to his pumpkin plant, according to his wife, Christin, who spoke to CNN about the enormous crop. The seed came from last year’s all-state champion pumpkin, which weighed more than 1,700 pounds. Before this year’s giant pumpkin, the biggest he’d ever grown was 220 pounds.

“He was out there daily watering it, covering it during the heat of the day and making sure the beetles didn’t get to it,” she says.

“He is hoping to break the 1,000-pound mark next year.”

All aboard the thousand-pound USS Pumpkin

Justin Ownby, a farmer from Cleveland, Tenn., grew a 910-pound pumpkin, and rather than using the ginormous gourd for a feast or an epic Halloween decoration, he decided to turn it into a boat.

The homesteader carved himself a boat and captained the vessel on the pond on his family’s property using an oar. Videos and pictures of the one-man pumpkin regatta have garnered 11,000 views.
