More than a hundred people have also disappeared more than a day after the disaster as a result of the collapse of a residential building in Surfside, Florida.
No survivors have been found since Thursday afternoon. Many families are in a disaster management center where DNA samples have been taken from them. This is necessary in order to be able to identify loved ones who have died under these rubble.
Yesterday, US President Joe Biden approved a request for assistance from the Florida Emergency Management Agency, which will hand over crisis management to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
The collapse took place on Thursday at 1.23 pm, when most of the residents slept. 35 people have managed to escape the ruins alive, but 159 people who may have been in the building are still being searched. Two of them were taken to hospital, another ten received medical care on site.
Miami-Dade County has a large community of Latin American descent and roots, and people from Colombia, Venezuela, Uruguay, Cuba, Paraguay, Puerto Rico and Argentina have also disappeared as a result of the collapse. There are 36 people from these countries in search.
The missing also includes Sophia, the sister of Silvana López Moreira Bó, Paraguay’s elf, with her husband, three young children and a domestic worker. Sophia’s wife Luis Pettengill’s aunt, Yuby Cartes, told the Miami Herald that she would stay at the scene until she learned something: “I want to do a lot, but there’s nothing to do.”
